Universal Bathroom

My next project will have to do with universal design. Universal design is a design of a product that allows anyone, no matter what disability they have,  to use the product.  Examples of basic universal designs are ramps, which allow people that can walk and are in wheelchairs to access it.  In this project, I will build an entire bathroom to allow people of all types to use without a problem. This bathroom will include a "wheelchair accesible" hot tub, toilet, shower, and sink.  This design will be efficient and also look nice and be safe for people with any disablity.  During class for the past week, we have been doing excersizes that allow us to see what it would be like to have a disability like blindness.  This has helped me design and invision my new bathroom for this project.

Shower

Picture
This shower is incredibly flashy but also very easy to use.  A person rolls up to the door and pushes a remote almost like a garage door opener.  A person in a wheelchair has plenty of room to wheel his/herself in and to move around.  The doors shut once the person is inside and the water turns on from 5 independent heads that spray at any selected angle.  This invention allows for minimal movement by the person taking a shower in order to get wet and rinse off.  Soap, Shampoo, and Conditioner dispensers could be added to the inside of the shower for easy access to everything needed.

Sink

Picture
Although this sink may look confusing it really is not.  There are two sides to this sink and a small, solar powered engine powers the motor that turns the sink.  There are three buttons on the sink for cold and warm water and the black button turns the sink to the dryer side.  The water shoots out of 4 side mounted nozzles which allows for minimal movements from someone with arthritis.  The Dryer side has 2 side dryers that also allow for minimal movement of the person drying there hands as compared to using a paper towel.

Toilet

Picture
This toilet is truely a work of art.  A person who is disabled and in a wheelchair can wheel themselves up to the toilet and easily pull themselves on using the handles located on the sides of the toilet.  the buttom opens and closes the "collapsable" toilet seat and a button on the stand in front of the toilet flushes it.  The toilet paper is one a bendable holder that can easily adjust in any direction to accomidate various body types.  The reflective mirror over the table allows for the toilet to double as a makeup stand and the compartments inside the stand provide ideal storage for any bathroon utensil.

Hot Tub

Picture
This shower is probably my best invention.  It has an automated door that closes into the floor and opens once a person is secruely inside.  A button is pushed while inside the Hot Tub and water starts flowing in from the jets and the waterfall located on the back of Hot Tub.  The Foam cushions provide excellent support and the jets are spaced evenly so all parts of the body are massaged.  the supportave hand rails in the center provide for a person of all types to use this.  Complimentary cup holders are also a new feature.

Reflection

Looking back on my Universal Design Project i notice one thing in particular that i could have done.  Managed my time better.  I was looking to do something amazing and i simply didn't have the time to put in that kind of effort.  Most of my designs and help came from Krissie's Bathroom Project or Marissa's Bathroom Project and both Marissa and Steve provided criticism.  Part of my toilet idea came from Marissa's unique toilet idea.  Another thing I could have done differently was to add more color.  I like the black tile and a lot of white and grey but I was advised by Krissie to add more vibrant colors to make the room look more inviting.  To conclude, I wish I had more time to finish the extreme detail I wanted to go into.  For example, I with I could have developed the shower into a more confortable, friendly environment.  Overall though I am very happy with my product and I hope to get a grade equivelent to my effort.
